Burien City Councilmember Hugo Garcia announced this week that he will seek re-election to Position 1, pledging to continue advocating for working families, small businesses, and inclusive policies in the city.

Garcia – first elected in 2021 – previously served as chair of both the Burien Planning Commission and the city’s Business and Economic Development Partnership.

A longtime resident of the area, Garcia immigrated from Guadalajara, Mexico, and moved to Burien in the early 1990s.

“My work here is not done,” Garcia said in a statement. “I will stand up for my neighbors and work every day to build a resilient city where all of our families can have the same opportunities I had as an immigrant kid raised in Burien before it became a city in the mid-90s.”

Garcia said his priorities include keeping Burien affordable, protecting the interests of workers and families, and defending the city against harmful national policy trends.

“We have seen what happens when the majority of the council does not stand up for all of the residents of our city,” he said. “Our small businesses workers and owners, families and youth need a champion who will fight for them.”

Expressing his continued passion to serve his community, Garcia added:

“Given what is happening at the national level, I am concerned that our residents will see the influx of policies that are not in their best interest. Our small businesses workers and owners, families and youth need a champion who will fight for them.”

If elected, Garcia said his focus will be on keeping Burien affordable, to reaffirm that all who seek to live here are able to pursue the American Dream, and to keep the needs of families and workers at the forefront of city policies.

  1. Please no, Burien needs someone else on the Council who has the ability of emotional control, he also just showed in his statement how he will refuse to be a team player for the good of Burien and just keep up his failed policy dreams. We need further recovery and not the same anchor tied to the past who preaches Ideological talking points

  2. Some of the best news I’ve heard all week.

I know this was a tough decision for you, Hugo. Thank you for continuing to serve the people of Burien.
