Every year in Washington State, low- and middle-income families and individuals face a variety of challenges. During tax season it can be especially difficult for folks to gain access to tax preparation services. We aim to come alongside our community by helping to alleviate this challenge.
Clare visited one of our United Way tax sites. She was a single mother of two making $30,000 a year, financial pressures created the challenge of paying for her housing and grocery expenses. During her time with our Free Tax Campaign volunteers, she received a $3,000 refund at absolutely no cost. Not only did she receive this huge refund, she also received help applying for SNAP and a utility discount program. This meant that she was able to get back a large portion of money and save more of it to meet her basic needs and support her two children.
In 2019, 1000+ of our amazing volunteers brought back $30.1 million in tax refunds and credits to people in our community and made over 4,000 referrals to additional services like financial coaching, Basic Food, and utility discount programs. For many of our clients like Clare, this can help to cover the cost of basic needs like food and shelter. For this upcoming tax season, we’re hoping to make an even bigger impact in our community. Not only will we be preparing taxes and connecting clients to public benefits, we will also help with Census navigation. This is an exciting and hugely important role that will help guarantee an accurate representation of our communities, particularly in already marginalized populations, such as immigrant communities and communities of color. An accurate count and representation will help ensure that critical public resources remain available for those who rely on them most.
