The King County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents across South King County about an increase in organized contractor fraud scams targeting homeowners with fake repair offers.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scams often involve individuals posing as legitimate home repair companies using professional looking logos, trucks and generic contracts to appear credible.
Investigators said the suspects commonly approach residents with unsolicited offers to repair chimneys or other structural issues. Victims are then pressured to provide large upfront payments, often through cashier’s checks, before minimal or poor quality work is performed.
The sheriff’s office said many victims are ultimately left with unfinished projects and significant financial losses while suspects continue demanding additional money as work progresses.
Authorities urged residents to avoid making large upfront payments and to carefully verify contractor credentials before agreeing to repairs.
The sheriff’s office also encouraged anyone who encounters suspicious contractors to document all interactions, contracts, payment requests and vehicle information, then report the incident immediately.
“f you encounter suspicious contractors, document everything, avoid paying upfront, and report the incident immediately,” police said. “Thorough documentation helps investigators connect cases and stop these scams.”
