At approximately 5:20 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024, the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Communication Center received several 911 calls reporting an explosion near the intersection of South 116th Street and 1st Avenue South in Burien (map below).

Callers described hearing a loud explosion, seeing the blast, or nearly being struck by an object that exploded while driving in traffic.

Burien Police/KCSO deputies responded to the scene and discovered remnants of what appeared to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that had been thrown onto the road.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though at least one vehicle’s occupants were left shaken by their close proximity to the explosion.

Deputies collected evidence at the scene and are continuing to follow up on the case.

Detectives from the KCSO Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) are also involved in the investigation.

The case remains open, and no further information has been released at this time.

  1. There’s a video that makes it quite obvious the device was thrown from an upper floor of the apartment building across the street.

  2. This explosive device was said to be spherical. The one on I-90 the following morning was apparently, also.

I’m not an I.E.D. expert, but is this a coincidence or no? Honestly asking.
