The King County Office of Law Enforcement Oversight (OLEO) is actively seeking community helpers, leaders, and advocates from unincorporated areas and contract cities served by the King County Sheriff’s Office – like Burien – to join its Community Advisory Committee for Law Enforcement Oversight (CACLEO).

OLEO is an independent agency representing the interests of the public in its efforts to hold the King County Sheriff’s Office accountable for providing fair and just police services.

The office is looking for people who live in and reflect the diversity of communities served by the King County Sheriff’s Office.

“OLEO welcomes people of all backgrounds, and their staff will provide orientation, training, and support to ensure those interested can learn how to have an impact and feel prepared to serve,” organizers said.

Members of the Community Advisory Committee serve as liaisons between the community and OLEO to help ensure that community feedback and priorities inform OLEO’s work. Advisory committee members work with OLEO and the public to advance and improve police practices to advance equity and public safety outcomes.

  • CACLEO members collect and review information about how people experience policing by the Sheriff’s Office, and they set priorities for change.
  • CACLEO uses public input to recommend specific ways the Sheriff’s Office policies and practices could be improved to better address community needs.
  • CACLEO helps build awareness with the public about avenues to address alleged police misconduct and serves as a liaison to community members seeking to file complaints directly or anonymously.
  • CACLEO advises the Sheriff, OLEO, and King County Council on issues of equity and social justice within police practices.

Members typically spend six to eight hours per month on committee work via video conference call or in-person when allowed and necessary, including a two-hour monthly meeting.
