In an update Tuesday, Assistant Chief and Fire Marshal Ray Desmarais of King County Fire District No. 2 described the challenges firefighters faced while battling the blaze:

“The first arriving unit was on scene at 10:43 a.m. and reported a small, single story residence with smoke and flames coming from the front of the house.

“After entering the home there were some interior renovations that made firefighting activities a bit more troublesome that one would expect from a one-story house, including interior stairwells to ‘half-lofts’ per the reporting crews.

“The quantity of what we call void spaces in the home lead to creative fire spread and made for a difficult time getting to all the hot spots in the home. A stone tile roof also added to on scene complications for getting to all the fire to extinguish the flames.

“Changes in strategy occurred while crews were on scene from offensive (interior), to defensive (exterior only), and later back to offensive after some good aerial ladder truck water application to the home.”

No injuries were reported to occupants or firefighters, and the origin and cause of the fire are under active investigation by the King County Fire Investigation Unit.
