The Port of Seattle has opened the public comment period on the draft Environmental Impact Statement for its Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP), launching a series of public meetings and community engagement opportunities across South King County through July 21.
According to the Port, the draft Environmental Impact Statement, or EIS, evaluates proposed near term projects under the Sustainable Airport Master Plan, known as SAMP. The public comment period began with the release of the document and will remain open through July 21.
Residents will have several opportunities to learn more about the proposal and provide feedback during the review period.
- The Port is scheduled to present information about the draft EIS to the Burien City Council on Monday, June 15.
- A joint meeting of the Burien Airport Committee and Des Moines Airport Committee is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. to discuss the Sustainable Airport Master Plan.
- Community members can also attend a learning session hosted by the Seattle Tacoma Airport Community Coalition for Justice at Glacier Middle School on Wednesday, June 17 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The event is intended to help residents better understand the plan and the public engagement process.
The Port of Seattle has also scheduled a series of public meetings to gather community input:
- Monday, June 22, 6 to 8 p.m., Glacier Middle School
- Thursday, June 25, 6 to 8 p.m., Wildwood Elementary School
- Saturday, June 27, 10 a.m. to Noon, Gregory Heights Elementary School
In addition, the cities of Burien and Des Moines plan to host a public meeting on July 14 at 6 p.m. The meeting location has not yet been announced.
The Sustainable Airport Master Plan has generated significant interest among communities surrounding Seattle Tacoma International Airport because of its potential long term effects on airport operations, transportation, environmental impacts and neighborhood quality of life.

Seatac airport should be downsizing, not expanding. It represents massive needless fossil fuel use, and in the next generation we will need that fuel to avoid famine disaster. This is not just speculation, but a well known long established problem. See any of various limits to growth authors and academics.
