The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) will host its annual “Chief for a Day” celebration on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025, at its Burien campus, honoring children with chronic or life-impacting medical conditions.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the WSCJTC, located at 19010 1st Avenue South (map below).

“Chief for a Day is a heartwarming community celebration where children facing significant medical challenges are sworn in as honorary Chiefs and Sheriffs for the day,” organizers said in a statement.

Eighteen Washington law enforcement agencies will participate in the event, each sponsoring an honorary Chief. The day will feature a formal swearing-in ceremony, meet-and-greets with local law enforcement, police vehicle displays, demonstrations, photos, gifts, and special presentations for the children and their families.

The event aims to recognize the bravery, resilience, and spirit of children living with chronic illnesses while fostering meaningful connections with their sponsoring agencies.

“Chief for a Day honors the bravery, resilience, and spirit of children living with chronic illnesses,” event organizers said. “It’s a powerful reminder of the compassion and unity within our law enforcement and local communities.”

The WSCJTC encourages public donations to support the event through its Chief for a Day Fund Drive.
