CARES Animal Shelter in Burien was broken into early Tuesday morning, Nov. 19, 2024, leaving staff dismayed as funds meant to support their animal care programs were stolen.

The thief, who took cash from the shelter’s register, also forced the shelter to rekey all locks to ensure the safety of staff, volunteers, and animals.

The shelter, which operates with limited funding, described the theft as a significant setback.

“This break-in is tough and unsettling, knowing someone violated our shelter, but we remain committed to our animals,” CARES shared in a statement.

Police Seeking Public’s Help

Burien Police are investigating the incident after reviewing surveillance footage provided by the shelter. The suspect was seen wearing a yellow jacket, a camouflage full face covering, and a backpack. Authorities are asking for public assistance in identifying the individual or reporting any suspicious activity near the shelter.

“Thank you for your ongoing support,” CARES added. “Together, we keep going for the animals who need us most.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Burien Police Department at (206) 477-2200 or CARES Animal Shelter at (206) 812-2737.

  1. How low of a human being can you possibly be to steal from animals and the folks helping care for them. Absolutely the lowest.
