Organizers are seeking community volunteers to help lead environmental education activities for middle school students during StormFest, a hands on stormwater learning event scheduled for June 2 through June 4 at Des Moines Beach Park.

According to event organizers, StormFest is an interactive environmental festival designed for sixth grade students from Highline Public Schools.

The program focuses on helping students understand the importance of stormwater management and its impact on local streams and waterways.

Community members are being asked to serve as environmental educators who will help facilitate activities and guide students through lessons related to watershed science and environmental stewardship.

Organizers said they are looking for a diverse group of volunteers from across the Highline area and the broader Puget Sound community who have experience working with youth in science or environmental education.

Participants who serve as educators during the three day program will receive a $435 stipend. Returning participants and bilingual educators may receive an additional $50 stipend, according to the announcement. Training, support, transportation and lunch will also be provided.

Organizers encourage people who cannot commit to all three days to still consider volunteering.

“Help make StormFest a success. Support students in their environmental stewardship journey as they discover the importance of stormwater and the impact on their local streams,” organizers said in the announcement.

Applications to participate as an environmental educator are due by April 27.
