Bailey
Meet Bailey! This sweet girl is just under a year old, and has been at the C.A.R.E.S. shelter since October. Bailey is a pit-mix with all the energy that comes with being a pup her age; she engages with the playful exuberance of light-hearted youth, and is just looking for someone to have fun with (this means plenty of daily exercise!). Although she can be a bit timid at first, this peppy pooch turns into an absolute sweetheart the moment she warms up to you – and she’s not afraid to give kisses! During our walk around the neighborhood, Bailey was incredibly curious about the world around her, and took plenty of time to sniff and investigate and examine her surroundings; she was very responsive to commands, however, and easily encouraged to move on to see the next interesting thing she might come across. Overall, Bailey has a wonderful temperament; according to the staff at C.A.R.E.S., “She is exceptionally smart and sweet, loves all kinds of people, and has done well with most of the other dogs we’ve had her around.†Over the course of her short life, Bailey has been in and out of multiple homes that just didn’t end up working out due to various circumstances. Unfortunately, she now suffers from mild separation anxiety. Because of this, she would probably do best in a home where she won’t be left alone for very long during the day (a home with another four-legged friend to keep her company would be ideal). According to the vet, Bailey is in excellent health. She has been spayed, dewormed, treated for fleas, microchipped, and is up-to-date on all her shots. Although she is housebroken, she can occasionally have accidents when left alone overnight, so she may take some time and training to get a hang of getting through the night. After her long stay at the shelter, and a lifetime of waiting to find a forever home, what this girl really needs is a family with a little patience, a lot of love, and the willingness to give her the attention, affection, and security she deserves. The gratitude of this gregarious pup will surely be a rich reward for whoever is lucky enough to adopt her.
Oscar
Say hello to Oscar! A stately gent with a refined taste for all the finer things in life (food and naps, mostly), this friendly fellow likes to spend his time on a lofty perch near the top of a towel rack, watching passersby through the glass pane door. This handsome and intelligent feline likes to come and go at his whim; staff at the shelter tell me he can be quite playful and affectionate, and he did engage with me momentarily with some of the toys in his room, however during my time with him he seemed mostly in the mood to eat and relax (and really, who can blame him?). Oscar is around 13 ½ years old, so he is ready to enjoy kitty retirement, and spend his golden years living the high life full of treats and cuddles. While hanging out with Oscar, I was able to spend some time giving him head pats and petting him a bit; but when he had enough, he was very forthright about letting me know. He gave me a pointed look, and, when I reached for him again, he gave me a very deliberate and expertly-controlled nip at my fingers – he was very careful not to hurt me and was clearly intentionally being gentle, but he expressed in no uncertain terms that he was done, and I let him go about his business (which was returning to curl up in his space on the towel rack). When I tried to offer him a pat on the head goodbye, he repeated the action precisely, so he is very well-versed at communicating his feelings, without lashing out. Oscar was surrendered to C.A.R.E.S. in November, when his previous owner had to move and couldn’t take him. They made sure to mention that he does well with kids, though, and other cats, and staff say he has gotten along with all the cats he’s been exposed to at the shelter. According to the vet, Oscar has no major health problems. They did notice some mild tartar on his teeth, so he could use a cleaning at some point in the future, but other than that, he’s been given the all-clear. He has been neutered, treated for fleas, dewormed, microchipped, and is up-to-date-on all his shots. This affable and dignified chap will make a courtly additional to the right home, for a family who can offer him both the love he deserves, and the respect he demands.
