Your Daily Dose of Natural Beauty, courtesy Advertiser Zenith Holland Nursery – Colorful Coleus an excellent bed-filler:

Today’s garden gem is Coleus, a delightful annual that will spread out up to 16 inches! The wide-spreading growth pattern of Coleus makes it an excellent choice to provide color and visual interest to garden beds. In particular, they will be successful in areas of partial shade.

Coleus offer a variety of shades and variegation lending them much versatility in complementary plantings such as combining them with begonias or New Guinea impatiens. As a tropical plant, Coleus enjoys the warmer temps of summer, however it is a thirsty plant and will require daily watering during hot dry summer spells. Care should be taken though, to avoid watering too heavily as the plant is susceptible to root rot. Fertile well-draining soil is essential to keep Coleus flourishing.

A last word about this popular plant in the gardener’s palette, the oils in the plants are toxic to dogs and cats. If your pooch or kitty likes to eat plants, coleus should be placed where they do not have access.
