The Highline Schools Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2025 scholarship program, offering graduating seniors from Highline Public Schools a chance to secure awards of up to $30,000.
With just one application required, students can apply for a variety of needs-based scholarships designed to support their post-secondary education.
Scholarships are funded by individual donors and endowed funds, ensuring long-term support for students. Nearly all awards are needs-based, determined using the Washington State DSHS Median Income Chart. Funds can be used for tuition, on-campus housing, books, and fees, and are paid directly to the recipient’s educational institution.
Application Process
The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, and submissions must include all required attachments and information. Extensions will not be granted. Students may complete their applications in one session or save their progress to return later.
Applicants will be matched to scholarships by a review committee based on criteria such as financial need, GPA, extracurricular activities, and essay responses. Required materials include:
- A recommendation letter from a teacher, counselor, mentor, or other non-family adult.
- Two short essays.
- Financial information from FAFSA or WAFSA and the family’s 2023 federal tax return.
- Current high school transcripts and GPA.
Jack Mayne Journalism Scholarship
The program includes a variety of scholarships, such as the Jack Mayne Journalism Scholarship, named in honor of the late veteran journalist who reported for The B-Town Blog/South King Media for several years. This scholarship is specifically for students pursuing a career in journalism or communications and recognizes academic excellence, passion for storytelling, and a commitment to serving the community through ethical journalism.
“Preference will be given to students who have not received substantial scholarships from other sources,” according to the Foundation. Scholarships are open to students attending accredited trade schools, colleges, or universities, with some awards available for those entering the military or workforce.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, students must:
- Graduate from a Highline Public School or meet specific eligibility for programs like PSSC.
- Maintain full-time enrollment and a minimum GPA of 2.5 for multi-year scholarships.
- Agree to use the funds within two years or defer for one year if necessary.
Recipients will be notified in April 2025, and scholarship funds will not be distributed to schools outside the United States.
