Meet Steve Lee – he just opened Spring Fields Gallery in the heart of the SW 153rd Street business district in Burien.
His business is designed to share the love of terrariums, paludariums and the exotic pets who dwell within them to you. He offers all that you need to start and maintain this awe-inspiring pastime. From the tanks and tools, to the animals and plants needed, along with workshops to bring your vision to life, they’ve got it all.
He has been passionate about the aquarium hobby for over 20 years. As with many folks, he started out with things like fish and then kept reptiles and amphibians, though never explored them in depth. Then a random video suggestion led him to discover the amazing worlds that you can create in a terrarium.
These really do look like worlds of their own, replete with various natural shades of green and brown, often playing counter point to the bright colors of frogs, lizards or perhaps a shock of color from bright plants – all live and thriving, in a symbiotic relationship that is surprisingly low maintenance. Unlike, as Steve pointed out, the disappointment that can come with keeping fish as a first pet. These tanks which tend to be lower maintenance, host animals which are more resilient and can be a more satisfying endeavor with which to begin.
Steve offers miniature ecosystems known as bioactive tanks. He can custom make them or you can take a worksop with all materials provided at a set price to help you stay on budget. You can take a workshop solo such as the nano moss workshop where up to six people can sign up for the date and times available via a convenient online scheduling system.

Terrarium Workshops Available
For the larger terrarium workshops you receive one-on-one attention and assistance to complete these impressive projects. Again signups are offered conveniently online.
Bioactive tanks continue to gain popularity probably because they are self contained ecosystems they require minimal cleaning. The animals, insects and plants fit together into a self-sustaining cycle, which lacks the odor that simple enclosures can develop.
Steve has spent years studying terrarium design, plants, and the animals that live in them.
He has studied abroad with masters of this craft and is proud to call the designer who first inspired him as his mentor.
Now, he has stepped into the exciting world of entrepreneurship. As a local small business, you can feel great about supporting his gallery rather than cobbling together products from big box pet stores or random online resources. He has planted himself in his convenient Burien location to serve all South King County tank enthusiasts who seek guidance and high quality products. He has chosen his products and animals with an emphasis on details that can make a difference for your pets, such as gut loading the insects that he sells (think crickets or others) with a high quality diet which can improve the color of your animal to its optimal beauty.
Come check out the shop! It’s easy with longer evening hours, ample free parking and a clean well-organized layout. You will be as amazed as we were by the serene quality of the tanks and their mesmerizing detail, along with Steve’s caring service and knowledge.
