A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help former Burien City Councilmember Stephen Lamphear recover from a financial loss that organizers say resulted from a cyberattack that stole his savings.
The fundraiser, organized by Michelle Bundy, describes the incident as a “devastating cyber attack” that left Lamphear facing a significant financial setback.
As of Monday, Sept. 21, the campaign has raised $1,300, with a goal of $2,000.
Lamphear is a longtime Burien community figure who served two terms on the Burien City Council, beginning in 1998 and leaving office after the 2005 election.
He has also worked as a tax professional for more than 40 years and volunteered through United Way to help people prepare their taxes.
Lamphear also played a role in establishing the Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden while serving on the Burien City Council, with helping lead efforts to preserve Elda Behm’s garden after her property was affected by plans for Sea-Tac Airport’s third runway.
The effort eventually helped lead to the creation of what is now the Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden in North SeaTac Park. The garden’s foundation was formed by volunteers to preserve gardens affected by the airport’s third runway project, according to the organization. Lamphear as a founding board member and former president of the garden organization.
Organizers are asking friends, neighbors and other community members to contribute to help Lamphear recover financially.
“Every amount, large or small, will help Stephen begin to recover and regain some financial stability,” organizers wrote on the fundraiser.
Those who cannot contribute are encouraged by organizers to share the fundraiser with others.
