Gregory Seahurst Swim Club in Burien is asking swim team members to skip the neighborhood tradition of toilet papering rival pools during swim meet season and instead donate unopened toilet paper to support a local food bank.

The donation drive runs now through July 28 at Gregory Seahurst Swim Club in Burien. The effort is aimed at turning a lighthearted summer prank into a community service project for families in need.

“While toilet papering has long been a lighthearted summer prank, it also results in hundreds of dollars’ worth of toilet paper being thrown away after just one night,” Alison Mitchell, Social Chair for the club told The B-Town Blog. “This year, we’re inviting our members to redirect that generosity toward families in need by donating unopened toilet paper through July 28.”

The club said toilet paper is one of the most requested items at food banks but is often among the least donated because it cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits.

“We thought this was a simple way to turn a fun tradition into a meaningful act of service while teaching our young members about giving back to the community,” Mitchell added.
