As the Executive Director of the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research (NWABR), I have the privilege of working at the intersection of scientific discovery, ethics, and public trust. In the Pacific Northwest, we are home to some of the world’s most cutting-edge research institutions, where innovation and ethical responsibility go hand in hand. Nowhere is this more evident than in the burgeoning field of AI-driven tools in healthcare and biomedical research.

We recently hosted a panel on science and innovation. The October 7, 2024, NWABR event focused on addressing clinical research and the path to drug discovery. This pivotal half-day session of panel dialogues was designed to educate the public, policymakers, and key stakeholders about the essential support required to sustain the biomedical research community.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a transformative force in healthcare, accelerating drug discovery, improving diagnostics, and creating new pathways for personalized medicine. But as with any groundbreaking technology, it brings with it a host of ethical questions and challenges. How do we ensure that AI is used responsibly, transparently, and in a way that promotes health equity? How can we guarantee that the benefits of AI reach all patients, not just those with the most access to advanced care?

At NWABR, we see AI not only as a tool for advancing the science of discovery but also as a catalyst for fostering greater public trust in biomedical research. The Pacific Northwest’s research community was built on a foundation of integrity, transparency, and a deep commitment to ethical research. As AI reshapes the landscape of medicine, we remain committed to upholding these values, ensuring that this technology is developed and used in ways that prioritize patient welfare and public trust.

Building Trust Through Ethical AI

One of the most critical questions surrounding AI in healthcare is: how do we ensure the technology works for everyone? AI models often rely on vast amounts of data to make predictions, but without diverse, representative datasets, these models can inadvertently reinforce existing health disparities. For AI to truly drive health equity, it must be trained on data that reflects the diversity of the populations it serves. This is a key point of emphasis in our work at NWABR, where we promote ethical standards that demand inclusivity in research practices.

When AI tools are used for diagnostics, such as detecting early signs of diseases like cancer or diabetic retinopathy, we must ensure they are accurate across all demographic groups. A model that works well for one population but fails for another does not serve the core mission of improving public health. It is essential that AI is developed with transparency and a commitment to addressing potential biases.
