On the weekend of March 24 and 25, 2023, the Highline High School Pirates Dance Drill team traveled to Yakima to compete in the Washington State 2023 1A/2A/3A Dance/Drill State Championships.

The state Championship berth had been secured by a successful showing at the district championships, where they qualified for state in two categories – Pom and Show.

“To make it to state your routine has to score higher than 213 and we did it!” said Helena Caldwell, co-coach of the drill team. “Only 3 teams in Washington qualified in  2A/3A Show and Highline was one of them!”

Along with the Pom qualification, this was the first time ever that the team also qualified for Show competitions. They decided to try their luck and skill at the Show category (dancing with props) after experiencing consecutive success over the season.

“Not bad for rebuilding after COVID,” Caldwell said.

The team is hoping to have a showcase (date TBD) to perform their state routines and honor their eight graduating Seniors as they close out their high school drill team participation. If staged, the showcase will be open to the community. Be sure and watch our coverage to join in the entertaining celebration of their accomplishments and watch these students in action.
