Highline Public Schools’ community-led Capital Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC) is developing a recommendation for a November school construction bond and is seeking community input to help shape that work, the district announced this week.

If approved by the school board and voters, the bond would fund school replacements and critical maintenance across the district.

This month, the committee is asking students, staff, families and community members to share feedback on key planning factors as CFAC members prepare to recommend a school bond package.

“We want this recommendation to reflect the priorities of the community,” said CFAC Co-chair Omaha Sternberg. “Gathering wide feedback helps us balance needs, make thoughtful tradeoffs and build a proposal people understand and trust.” Sternberg has served on CFAC since 2017 and helped to recommend the successful 2022 school bond.

Participants are invited to review the factors identified by the committee, rank them in order of priority, and share which factor they ranked first — and why.

The bond planning factors include:

  • Building condition & infrastructure
  • Capacity & growth planning
  • Cost-effective & long-term solutions
  • Equity & student impact
  • Feasibility & timing
  • Financial responsibility
  • Health, safety & security

Community members can share their thoughts using the bond planning ThoughtExchange at gethps.info/bond-planning. The ThoughtExchange is open until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, March 1. Respondents may return to add stars to ideas submitted by others until the ThoughtExchange closes.

Community input will be shared with CFAC in early March to help committee members finalize a bond recommendation. This spring, CFAC plans to present its recommendation to the school board, including a proposed bond package, cost, and estimated property tax impact. The school board will then decide whether to place a bond measure on the November ballot.
