From our friends at WABI Burien:
WABI Burien’s next Walk with a Doc will be this Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 11 a.m.
Meet at Burien Town Square Park at 11:00 a.m. (the southwest corner at 480 SW 152nd St. Burien WA 98166).
In honor of Pride month, I’ll be talking about two little hormones that cause a whole lot of hubbub: testosterone and estrogen.
Specifically, I’ll be talking about their effects on the body and addressing some common misconceptions, such as the idea that testosterone “makes men aggressive” and estrogen “makes women emotional”. It’s important to note that while these hormones can influence our ideas about gender, biology alone does not dictate gender identity. In explaining this, I’ll also talk a bit about where the hormones come from in the body and how they can be administered as medication. I won’t be going into how they are used to treat specific conditions though (I’ll save that for future talks).
I want to acknowledge that this is a part of a paradigm shift in our understanding of society. If you find yourself scratching your head when you think about this stuff, good! It’s better to be asking questions than dismissing it all entirely. It is a big topic so I won’t have all the answers, but I can try to track them down, so feel free to email me as well.
