Burien resident Jessica Ivey this week officially announced that she will be running for Burien City Council, aiming to bring “a fresh perspective, strong leadership, and a commitment to community-driven progress” to the city’s local government.
She currently serves as Vice Chair of the Burien Planning Commission.
Here’s more info from Ivey:
As Vice Chair of the Burien Planning Commission, Jessica is a passionate advocate for the city’s residents, neighborhoods, and businesses. As a dedicated community organizer and leader, Jessica has a proven track record of working with diverse groups to find practical solutions to the issues facing Burien residents, from affordable housing and economic development to public safety and environmental sustainability.
“I am running for City Council because I believe in Burien’s potential,” said Ivey. “We have a diverse, vibrant community, and together, we can create a future where every person, every neighborhood, and every family thrives. I’m committed to listening to the voices of all Burien residents and advocating for policies that create a safe, inclusive, and prosperous city for everyone.”
Jessica’s priorities include:
• Affordable Housing: Ensuring that Burien residents have access to affordable housing options that meet the needs of working families, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
• Public Safety: Strengthening public safety through proactive community engagement, better support for local law enforcement, and increased investment in mental health and crisis intervention services.
• Economic Development: Supporting small businesses, creating good-paying jobs, and ensuring Burien’s economy thrives while maintaining the unique character of the city.
• Environmental Sustainability: Prioritizing green spaces, promoting clean air initiatives, and protecting the local environment to ensure Burien remains a healthy and beautiful place to live for generations to come.
Jessica looks forward to meeting with voters across Burien over the coming months to discuss her vision for the city’s future. For more information about her campaign, visit www.jessica4burien.com.

Info on 2025 Elections
Burien City Councilmembers serve staggered four-year terms, and roughly half the Council is up for election every two years (NOTE: It is still unknown if any incumbents are running again or not):
- Position 1: Incumbent Hugo Garcia
- Position 3: Incumbent Jimmy Matta
- Position 5: Incumbent/Deputy Mayor Sarah Moore
- Position 7: Incumbent Stephanie Mora
In 2025, there will be a primary election on Aug. 5, with the General Election on Nov. 5.
The deadline to file for the 2025 election is May 9, 2025.
Do candidates need to specify which council position they are running for? I don’t see a position number mentioned in this post or on the candidate’s website.
Not until they officially file for candidacy with the King County Elections.
I have the honor and pleasure of knowing Jessica personally. She is invested in Burien and genuinely cares about finding a path forward via the middle ground. She is well versed on the issues facing Burien and will offer creative, thoughtful policy solutions. Most importantly, she understands that the tug-of-war between far left and far right factions of the community isn’t getting us anywhere. Her intelligence, experience and sense of humor are well-suited to working “across the aisle,” so to speak. I wholeheartedly offer my support to this powerhouse of a woman, Burien needs more citizens like her.
The information she’s provided uses all the key words and phrases, what we need to know is where her loyalty is because it’s not clear. Is she all in for Burien or is she doing the bidding of outside interests?
So your opinion is she is a moderate and will be balanced, all she needs to do to prove that is answer these 4 questions yes or no.
#1 Camping Ban
#2 Shack Village
#3 Open drug use
#4 Minimum Wage
It depends on those answers which way she leans and votes.
I reached out to a multitude of contacts whose experience range from residents and business owners to individuals involved in public safety, all gave me resounding support for Jessica. She wants to be part of Burien’s ongoing recovery from the damage caused by activists and misguided puppets. Keep Burien safe and sane I say.
