Burien residents interested in serving on the City Council have until 4 p.m. this Friday, June 26, to apply for appointment to the vacant Position No. 2 seat.
City Council Position No. 2 became vacant when Linda Akey resigned on May 18, 2026.
The City Council will appoint a Burien resident to fill the seat, with the appointment expected to begin on or around July 27.
The appointee will serve until the results of the November 2027 general election are certified and the elected successor has taken the oath of office.
Burien’s seven member City Council serves as the city’s governing body, establishing policies and laws, adopting the annual budget, approving appropriations, contracting for services and granting franchises.
Burien City Councilmembers serve staggered four year terms, with roughly half of the council seats up for election every two years. All councilmembers are elected at large and represent the city as a whole rather than specific districts.
To qualify for appointment, applicants must be at least 18-years-old, a United States citizen with no felony convictions, and a registered voter who has lived within Burien city limits for at least one year before the appointment.
Applicants must submit a letter of interest, resume and completed application to the city by the June 26 deadline. Letters of support from community members are optional.
Applications may be submitted in person, by mail or by email to cityclerk@burienwa.gov.
