Kyle Campbell is your Burien neighbor and the artisan behind Fir Street Woodworks.

For Kyle, woodworking is much more than shaping raw lumber into furniture—it’s about creating pieces that become an enduring part of your life’s story. Whether it’s a sturdy dining table where families gather for shared meals, or a dedicated desk where creative ideas come to life, every project is approached with care, patience, and purpose. The intention is to create a functional art object of intrinsic value, destined to be a treasured heirloom passed down through generations.
Kyle’s journey into woodworking began in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeking a creative outlet, he decided to take a 7-day woodworking class centered around crafting a solid body electric guitar from scratch (something he had always aspired to do). As he says “My feelings were that if I came out of the COVID crisis the same person I was when it all started, then I missed an opportunity to grow.”

Working out of a small outdoor back patio, of a one-bedroom apartment in the Central District, he relied on a compact Tough Shed filled with tools. He was hooked, as he shares:
”Everyday I would get up, unpack the shed and build until it got dark. When it would rain, I would set up the canopy and work in the rain. When it was cold, I put on a jacket. I wasn’t going to be deterred.”
Though early experiences brought challenges and a brief return to unfulfilling corporate work, Kyle realized he missed the profound sense of purpose that came with hands-on creation. He loved bringing his ideas and imagination to life in a tangible way and committed himself to his current passion.

In the intervening time Kyle, his wife and cats relocated to Burien (which, BTW they love). He immersed himself in the study of fine woodworking at Ebanista School of Fine Woodworking. There he fell in love with the art of fine furniture making. He found inspiration from both his instructor Jonah Cohen and master craftsmen like James Krenov, a foundational influence of the 70’s and 80’s who inspired a generation of studio furniture makers and woodworkers who rejected both mass industrial production and flashy, conceptual art-furniture.
It was also there that Kyle embraced the Japanese concept of ikigai—finding one’s “reason for being” at the intersection of passion, skill, vocation, and profession. He says:
“Your ikigai exists where all four overlap, guiding daily actions and long-term goals.”
It seems safe to say that Fir Street Woodworks is not just a business to pay the bills. There’s something a bit more going on. Kyle says it best when asked about his personal “Why do this?”

“I decided to pursue this business not only because of my absolute love of the craft and the meaning I find in the act of creation itself, but also because in a world that continues to be overrun by AI, I feel like what the world needs is more humanity in the things that we consume and enjoy. Wood is an imperfect material, which is what makes is perfect. Humanity is also found in its imperfections. I can’t live in a world that forgets what it means when humans make things.”
