The Burien City Council is scheduled to consider repealing part of the city’s minimum wage code, discuss economic development priorities and review possible changes to council rules during its next regular meeting on Monday, May 18.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Burien City Hall (map below), and can be viewed live on Comcast TV Channel 21, via Zoom here and via live-stream here.

One of the most closely watched items will be Ordinance No. 892, which would be adopted on approval of the consent agenda. The ordinance would repeal Burien Municipal Code Chapter 5.15, the city’s council adopted minimum wage ordinance.

Burien currently has two ordinances that appear to set a higher minimum wage than state law, creating confusion for some employees and employers about which ordinance applies and how.

The agenda bill says BMC Chapter 5.15 was adopted by the council and may be amended or repealed by the council. BMC Chapter 5.16, however, was approved by voters as Initiative 1 and can only be repealed by Burien voters.

The council is also scheduled to hold a joint meeting with the Business and Economic Development Partnership. The discussion is expected to focus on the 2025 BEDP work plan and next steps for implementation, including work related to corridor vitality and redevelopment.
