In compliance with the Washington State’s “Safe Start” plan, the City of Burien announced on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 that it is cancelling all city-organized events, at least through the month of August.

This means that – for the first time in 99 years(!) – the city’s annual Independence Day Parade will not take place, along with Strawberry Days, Music in the Park, Burien Pride and much more,

Here’s more from the city:

Also cancelled:

      • Spring Moshier Pottery Sale
      • Spring and Summer Family Fun Run
      • Great Day of Play
      • Music in the Park

Other community events sponsored by the City of Burien, and organized by Discover Burien, will also be postponed or canceled:

      • Taste of Burien
      • Burien Pride
      • Strawberry Days & Father’s Day Car Show
      • Independence Day Parade

“Our community events are a big part of what makes Burien such a special place to live and play,” said Brian J. Wilson, Burien city manager. “As we struggle through weeks of social isolation, we know many were looking forward to seeing friends and neighbors again. Canceling these events was a very difficult decision, but public health and safety is our top concern. We look forward to finding ways to support creative opportunities for community members to connect with each other safely.”

“We are working on ways to either reschedule, or make these events work under public health guidelines,” added Debra George, Discover Burien executive director.

The Burien Farmers Market re-opened on May 7, 2020 and will continue as long as public health agencies allow them to operate (read more here). Farmers markets are currently considered an essential business, and they will be required to follow public health safety protocols.

The City will not issue special event or parks permits for any events through July 15, 2020. The City will follow state and county proclamations on large gatherings when evaluating whether to host or permit public events beyond that date.

Please check the City’s website for the most up-to-date information on events.
