James (Jim) Richard Hughes
1948 ~ 2018

Jim Hughes, 70, of Burien, WA passed away on November 21, 2018 from cardiac arrest.

Jim was born in Chicago on June 7, 1948 to Richard and Jean (Wirtz) Hughes. The family moved to Seahurst when Jim was five years old. Jim was the 4th of 12 children. He attended St. Francis of Assisi, O’Dea High School, Highline High School and the University of Washington.

After serving his country in the U.S. Army, Jim returned to Burien, and began his lifelong career in the food industry. While working at Out to Lunch, Jim met, fell in love with and married Connie Posz. Jim and Connie had two sons, Alex and Kenny, two grandsons (Alias and Landon) and one granddaughter (Athena).

Jim bought Sal’s Deli in Burien and turned it into one of the most well known and loved restaurants in the area. Sal’s Deli was the common gathering place for family, friends, Burien residents and local businesses. Jim knew every customer by name and would always stop by their table to greet them regardless of how busy the restaurant was at the time.

Jim was very active in the Burien business community, serving on numerous boards and councils over the years and was awarded Burien’s Businessman of the Year in 2006.

Jim loved his friends and family more than anything else in life. He remained lifelong friends with all of his childhood classmates at St. Francis. Jim was proud to be part of the ever-growing Hughes clan of 169 and counting, aka the Fam-Damily.

Jim is survived by his wife, Connie, two sons Alex and Kenny, grandson Alias, granddaughter Athena, siblings Jeannie Ogdon, Bill Hughes, Cathy Low, Patty Murray, Tom Hughes, Peggy Fairchild, Dick Hughes, Rita Baccus, Theresa LaFrambois and 139 nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass for Jim will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Seahurst, WA on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of Jim’s life in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Tears Foundation, a non-profit organization which assists with funeral costs and emotional support to those who have lost a child. Donations may be made at http://thetearsfoundation.org/.
