Demolition of the historic, burned-out, historic “blue house” and garage at Dottie Harper Park in Burien has been completed, with crews scheduled to haul away remaining debris on Wednesday, April 8.
The next phase of work will involve adding fresh soil and sod to restore the site into an open field, according to the city.
Officials said there are no immediate plans for further development of the area, and the house will not be replaced.
As we previously reported, the iconic “blue house” was destroyed by a fire that was determined to be intentionally set on Oct. 25, 2025.
Officials said the blaze began outside the south side of the building and spread inside, collapsing the main floor into the basement.
Sadly, the structure and all of the city’s recreational equipment and event supplies stored there were declared a total loss.
The historic 864-square-foot house, built in 1954, once served as the Burien Arts Gallery and most recently stored supplies for major community events including Arts-A-Glow and Día de los Muertos.
During the demolition, the parking lot at the site was closed.
City officials said the project included demolition of what was left of the existing structures, which will be followed by regrading of the area and planting grass once the debris is cleared.
