Stop the presses! The Hi-Liners Musical Theatre is back this weekend with a high-energy production of Disney’s Newsies the Broadway Musical, continuing through Aug. 3 at the Highline Performing Arts Center.
Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right.
The Tony Award-winning musical is based on the real-life Newsboys’ Strike of 1899 and features stirring choreography, memorable songs, and a message of standing up for what is right.
The production will run across two weekends, with shows at 7 p.m. Fridays and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, concluding Aug. 3.
All performances take place at the Highline Performing Arts Center (map below).
“This promises to be an entertainment of the highest order,” the company shared in its announcement. “Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering Newsies for the first time, this show will leave you inspired to seize the day.”
This production is recommended for ages 10 and up. While the show is family-friendly, please note that it includes:
- Mild staged fight scenes
- Occasional curse words
- Brief references to smoking and drinking (including an unlit cigar)
