The 2024 Burien Brat Trot, an annual 5K and 1K fun run benefiting the Highline Schools Foundation, saw hundreds of participants on Saturday morning, Oct. 5, 2024, as the community came together to raise funds for local students.

The popular event, which has grown into a beloved tradition in Burien, featured runners of all ages and fitness levels, with proceeds going toward scholarships, classroom grants, and essential resources for students in the Highline School District.

1st Place Winner Keeps Running After Crossing Finish Line

This year’s top winner was Paul Young – a two-time previous winner of the 2022 and 2015 Brat Trots – who crossed the finish line first in the 5K race. Young was so committed to finishing the full 5K though that, after crossing the Brat Trot finish line, he kept running full speed eastbound on SW 152nd Street for at least another block or so – check it out in the video below:

The Burien Brat Trot isn’t just about competition – it’s a Oktoberfest-ivey occasion that encourages families and friends to get outside, be active, and support education. Participants came dressed in creative costumes, adding to the fun, while local vendors and sponsors lined the streets near the race start near Burien Town Square, offering food, beverages, and entertainment.

The event has long been a key fundraiser for the Highline Schools Foundation, helping to provide critical support to the district’s students and teachers. Organizers noted that the money raised this year will go toward scholarships for college-bound seniors, athletic programs, and initiatives designed to promote educational equity.

In addition to Young’s victory, several other participants placed highly in various categories.

  • Sarah Paquet, women’s winner for the 5k.
  • 1k winners were Kevin Nunez and Emie Macon.

Organizers ended up with 701 total registered runners for both races.

As the day wrapped up, organizers expressed their gratitude to the community and to event co-producer Discover Burien for coming together to support education and the next generation of leaders.
