The City of Burien kicked off its 25th Anniversary year with a celebration at the Community Center on Monday night, Feb. 26.
Burien won’t officially turn 25 until 12:01 a.m. on Feb. 28, but it’s never too early to start celebrating, right?
The event was hosted by City Manager Brian Wilson, and featured guest speakers Arun Jhaveri (the City’s first Mayor), current Mayor Jimmy Matta, King County Executive Dow Constantine, along with a video message from Congresswoman Rep. Pramila Jayapal (see her Tweet below).
Also present to commemorate B-Town’s 25th B-Day were many previous councilmembers, volunteer citizens, businesspeople, members of the Consulate of Mexico, and former Mayors, including Wing Woo, who was seriously injured in a tragic accident in Maui in June, 2016.
The celebration was held in front of a full house in the Seahurst Banquet Room, and along with dignitaries – including former State Legislator Georgette Valle – there were historic displays from the city’s 10th anniversary party in 2003, as well as new, infographic-style ones about its 25-year history.

I proudly represent @Burien in Congress and today we celebrate this beautiful and diverse city’s 25th birthday! Burien’s story begins with people’s desire to have their voices heard. Today it is a growing city of 50,000 where many languages are spoken. Here’s to the next 25! pic.twitter.com/GIwoG7rHeK
