Your Daily Dose of Natural Beauty, courtesy Advertiser Zenith Holland Nursery – Captain Lovely sets a course for Summer Color:

Today we explore the beauty of the Captain Lovely Calla Lily. The name is not only a little amusing, but definitely apropos for this lovely Calla Lily. You will remember from the last time we explored Calla Lilies, that they are a bloom with symbolic significance of humility and devotion. Now let’s dive a little deeper into the care of these stunners.

Calla Lilies are native to South Africa and are actually easy to grow either in garden borders, patio containers or even indoors in containers. The lilies are rhizomes that grow firm plants culminating in the stunning chalice shared flowers. In our climate, the blooms will delight in summer until early fall. They will thrive in full sun but can accept partial shade. Consistent moisture is essential, along with good drainage to prevent root rot. Feeding with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks is recommended until blooms have faded.

To enjoy the flowers in a bouquet or arrangement, the flowers should be harvested in the cool of morning or evening. They flowers should be pulled not cut to prevent damage to both flowers and tubers. Most Cala Lilies are winter hardy in USDA zones 8-10 and can be left right in the ground to overwinter. Look for their re-emergence in spring and a growth to full blooming once again in summer. With amazing colors and typical perennial return, Calla Lilies deliver a healthy return on your gardening investment.
