The Burien City Council at its first meeting of 2018 elected new Councilmember Jimmy Matta as its Mayor, replacing Lucy Krakowiak. Matta is the City’s first Latinx Mayor in the City’s 25-year history. The Hispanic population of Burien is estimated to be between 21-25 percent. Matta beat veteran councilmember Nancy Tosta by a 4-1 vote, with two abstentions – Bob Edgar and Lucy Krakowiak. Tosta was the only other member nominated. Austin Bell was elected as Deputy Mayor by a 5-0 vote, with Edgar and Krakowiak abstaining.]]>
