Longtime councilmember Lucy Krakowiak was unanimously selected as the new Mayor for Burien at Monday night’s city council session.
Krakowiak was first elected to the council in Nov. 2003, and is currently serving her third term.
She was elected by the Council to serve as Deputy Mayor in 2013, and will now serve as Mayor for two years.
She has lived in Burien since 1988 and has had a massage therapy business located in Burien since 1994. She was born and raised in Kailua-Oahu, Hawaii, and graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. Lucy explored the field of science as a high school biology and chemistry teacher and a field researcher at the University of Washington School of Forestry before settling down to her massage and craniosacral therapy career.
Bob Edgar was unanimously selected as Deputy Mayor.
Under the city’s Council-Manager form of government, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are largely ceremonial positions appointed by the City Council.
The Mayor presides over council meetings and represents the City at local and regional meetings and events.
The Deputy Mayor fills in for the Mayor at meetings and also represents the City.
A City Manager hired by the Council administers the day-to-day operations of the City.
Also, a swearing-in ceremony was conducted by the Honorable Mark Eide, King County District Court Judge, to new Councilmembers Stephen Armstrong, Lauren Berkowitz, Nancy Tosta and Debi Wagner.
Awesome Lucy is great!
