Lauren Robles, the Director and Founder of ‘Grupo Folklorico Citlali,’ tells us that – due to the imminent Jan. 31 closing of the Burien Annex – the dance group is seeking a temporary space until April and perhaps longer.
The group is a traditional Mexican dance troupe that teaches youth from ages 3 to 22. You may have seen them perform at Burien’s annual Día de Muertos celebration at the Community Center, or at the Strawberry Festival, Independence Day Parade or White Center Jubilee.
“I founded the group in 2012 with the goal to share with the community the art of traditional Mexican dance but at the same time to build friendships, responsibilities, team work, and cultural awareness for the dancers,” Lauren told The B-Town Blog. “We’ve been fortunate to use the Burien Annex these past seven years for free but with the closing that gives no home for the dancers / group.”
The group charges dancers only $10 a month to help pay for the fabric, ribbon, yarn, etc. needed for costumes.
“I keep a low cost because I do not teach for profit but because I love my students and what I do,” she added. “At the moment we are looking for a temporary space until April and then after that may be the option to use on needed basis.”
Lauren adds that the group is also more than willing to put on performances for free to help with the space.
