The Burien community is coming together to support a local salon owner and dedicated volunteer as he recovers from a serious health crisis involving heart and kidney issues.

Steven Smythe – co-owner of Salon Spectrum on SW 153rd Street in Burien – has been an active supporter of local youth programs, including Highline High School’s Fashion Club and Project PROMise, while maintaining his full-time work at the salon.

Now, as he faces a challenging recovery, friends and clients are raising funds to help with medical expenses and lost income.

“Steven has such a big and kind heart,” said Sharon, a friend and client of the salon. “Right now he is facing a very serious health crisis and recovery period. As you may know with owning a salon you make money by your appointments, and medical bills can mount up quickly.”

With medical bills growing quickly, and his partner Ken managing the salon alone, supporters are calling for donations to ease the financial burden.

How to Help

Community members are encouraged to contribute any amount to assist with Steven’s recovery.

Donations can be made online at a GoFundMe Page, and supporters are asked to share the link to spread awareness.

“Any donation big or small would be so helpful as Ken continues to work and keep the salon running while considering what the future may hold,” Sharon said.

  1. I have known Ken and Steven for over 30 years as a friend and customer, and cannot begin to express how deeply Steven’s health challenges hurt my heart and soul. I hope and pray that the community will come together to support them during this time.
