The Burien Severe Weather Shelter will open its doors this Friday night, Jan. 17, 2025, starting at 7 p.m. to provide relief for those seeking refuge from frigid conditions.

The National Weather Service is predicting a low around 29 for Friday night, and similar lows through next Tuesday night at least.

The shelter, hosted at Highline United Methodist Church (13015 1st Ave South; map below), is currently scheduled to remain open through Monday night, Jan. 20, though plans may extend based on updated weather forecasts.

Volunteers, Donors Needed

“As always, we will be relying on our community volunteers and donors to serve our guests well,” organizers said.

Community volunteers and donors play a vital role in the shelter’s operation. Organizers are encouraging individuals to sign up for shifts and contribute supplies using this link.

Donations will be accepted during setup on Thursday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and daily during shelter operation from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Here are some useful guidelines for volunteeringdonations and preparing meals at the shelter.
