The King County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that just before 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, a pedestrian was hit by a car in the 13800 block of Ambaum Blvd. SW (map below).

Police say that a car was driving northbound on Ambaum when it struck a pedestrian who was crossing the street from west to east and was mid-block, NOT in the crosswalk.

The vehicle driver did not see the pedestrian and struck him.

From photos, it appears that the front windshield of the car was severely damaged.

The pedestrian – identified by his wife Adri Merari Escarzaga as Wilmer Donis – was apparently on his way to take to bus to work at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning. Police said he has life threatening injuries and was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

According to a Facebook post, the victim’s wife said:

“My husband has a broken fibula, broken arm, broken pelvis, broken nose and a few other broken bones in the face. He might be going again into surgery tomorrow for his pelvis.

Thank you all for your kindness and prayers.”

There was no drugs or alcohol suspected on the part of the driver or pedestrian.

Ambaum was closed for a while for an investigation.

As we gather more information on this incident, we’ll update this post…

  1. This seems to truly be an accident, & I pray for all parties involved. This gives me a chance to speak of all the speeding going on day & night on Occidental Ave.S. My daughter lives on that St & children play in the St ( one is handicapped). People walk their animals every day. Someone is going to get killed on this street if the speedsters don’t slow way down. Cut your speed in half, 25mph would be good, or have the town put in speed bumps.Thanking you in advance for any help. Remember these children & animals deserve a safe envirourment.

  2. maybe there’s a way to slow traffic way down on South Occidental Ave. It’s a constant race track 24 hrs a day. Children play around the street & one is handicapped. It’s just a matter of time before the unthinkable will happen. How about speed bumps, or more patrols? I’m truly sorry for the people in the accident yesterday. My prayers are with all of those hurt. On anoher note, it’s sad that people have to deface others property. How sad we can’t live as friends with our neighbors.God said to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Thank you for letting me share my point of view.

  3. This is so terrible. It brings back a memory I have of another incident of over 10 years ago. I drive to work on Ambaum around that time each morning & it is very dark in the winter. I was in the left lane behind another car and she started to slow. I could see a pile of garbage in the road across from the LDS church and what I thought was a large dog.

But no it was a person fallen in the road. I pulled into the right lane and we the left side driver and I stopped blocking the street. I had gotten my car in park and the brake on when I was rear ended by a driver who exited the apt building and did not pay attention. He was going so fast his car went under my rear bumper from his emergency braking. To this day I think I saved that poor man in the street from being run over.

The moral of the story is SLOW DOWN – PAY ATTENTION. It is so easy to not see a person in dark clothing in the street.

I pray for Mr Donis. We all need to take care of each other.

  4. This was the husband of a friendwith children a pet and lots of responsibilities. Thank goodness they have a strong burien support system to take up some of them while they cant.
Anbaum is the worst for speedsters…a lot of them on purpose just to be one vehicle ahead. For what? To kill yourself or someone else?
Please drive focused and purposefully being mindful of the impact your heavy car can have on our fragile bodies.
    Said with love,
