Donations and Volunteers are needed during these very cold days at the Burien Severe Weather Shelter, and below are ideas on how YOU can help.

Here are some numbers from the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA) for severe weather shelters in South King County from Friday night, Jan. 12, 2024:

  • Auburn overnight warming (no beds, capacity 60) – 59 people
  • Burien (capacity 50) – 67 people, up from 48 on Thursday
  • Kent (capacity 40) – 34 people, up from 29 on Thursday
  • Renton (capacity 40) – 56 people, up from 31 on Thursday

Volunteers, Food, Gloves & More Needed

Organizers are in need of dinner supplies, including:

  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Shredded cheese
  • Cans of condensed milk
  • Bottled water

Please be sure to donate using this signup link so they know how much to expect.

They also have the highest need for:

  • Warm, waterproof gloves in adult sizes (especially for women)
  • Daytime Volunteers on Sunday (9-10, the shelter will NOT be open) to help reset the church for services (this is labor intensive and involves carefully stacking cots.)
  • A new role: Daytime Hosts on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024.

“Due to the holiday, many of the sites our guests usually go to during the day will be closed, so we’re going to be open during the day (Monday ONLY) and we need hosts to help us keep everyone comfortable and everything running smoothly.”

Volunteers will be working at the direction of the experienced staff, assisting in the kitchen, the donation closet, or the check in as needed.

Honor MLK by Volunteering

And what better way to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King than by a few hours of service? Shifts are open from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 – 7 p.m., but if you would be available for a different range just email shelter.highlineumc@gmail.com and let them know!

“Thank you!”

The shelter is located at Highline United Methodist Church, at 13015 1st Ave S., Burien, WA 98168:
