Two free community events focused on nature and hands-on learning are coming to the Shark Garden in Burien this June, offering activities for families, gardeners and insect enthusiasts alike.

Bug BioBlitz
Friday, June 14, 1–4 p.m.
On Friday, June 14, from 1 to 4 p.m., the Shark Garden will host a Bug BioBlitz in partnership with the Washington Native Bee Society.
Attendees will learn how to use the iNaturalist app to photograph and identify bugs, birds and plants throughout the garden.
Experts from the Native Bee Society and the Shark Garden Pollinator Program will be on hand to assist with identification and help participants build a snapshot of the garden’s biodiversity.
“This is a great opportunity to contribute to citizen science while having fun in the garden,” said Taryn Koerker, one of the organizers.
No registration is required, but participants are encouraged to arrive at the beginning for an iNaturalist orientation. The event is family-friendly and attendees should bring a smartphone, hat and water bottle.

WA Bonsai Swap Meeting
Friday, June 21, 1–5 p.m.
On Friday, June 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., the garden will host a Washington Bonsai Swap Meet, where local bonsai enthusiasts can buy, sell or trade plants.
A live demonstration is scheduled for 2 p.m., and experienced growers will be available to answer questions and share their expertise.
“This is a great chance to meet others in the bonsai community and maybe take home a new plant,” said co-organizer Ben B. Nguyen.
The event is organized by Nguyen, Stephen Vaughn and the Washington State Bonsai Forum and Marketplace. Those interested in selling should email Nguyen in advance, as space is limited.
Both events will take place at the Shark Garden (map below), which offers free parking and is located near the Southern Heights Elementary School campus in Burien.
