King County Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindall addressed concerns in a video statement released on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025, regarding new federal immigration policies, reaffirming that her office will not participate in deportations or inquire about immigration status during routine interactions.
The King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) contracts with the City of Burien and 15 other jurisdictions to provide police services, operating as the Burien Police Department, and operates its Precinct 4 offices in Burien.
“Our job is to follow and enforce Washington state law, and we will not deport undocumented immigrants or their families,” Cole-Tindall said in her video statement, included below.
She emphasized that King County deputies will not ask about a person’s citizenship or immigration status at community events or during routine law enforcement activities. This stance aligns with the Keep Washington Working Act, which maintains that Washington State will remain a place where the rights and dignity of all residents are protected.
However, Cole-Tindall made it clear that the Sheriff’s Office remains committed to public safety and criminal law enforcement.
“This does not mean we will allow or tolerate crime in the county,” she said. “If it is determined that someone has committed a violent crime, we will work with our law enforcement partners for investigations that are criminal in nature, not for civil immigration matters.”
The Sheriff underscored the importance of trust between law enforcement and the community, ensuring that all residents – regardless of immigration status – feel safe contacting law enforcement when needed.
The Sheriff’s Office encouraged residents to report crimes without fear and to continue engaging with law enforcement as part of the community.
“The best part of working here is serving the wonderfully diverse community that makes up King County,” Cole-Tindall added.
What rights? Please explain?! I hope if I commit a crime I get slapped…. no I get a “atta girl” and let go.
Sheriff Cole is assisting illegal aliens and breaking the law. This is a criminal offense coming into the country illegally. She needs to be removed as she is not doing her duty by upholding our laws, and that includes our federal immigration laws. I’m hopeful than the near future all of these officials, including sheriffs like this one end up getting prosecuted for violating 8 US code 1324. She is encouraging illegal aliens to come into our state, and giving them aid which is all crimes.
We have a serious case of lawlessness by our officials
