Dear Editor,

I read with interest the recent Letter to the Editor about the upcoming election and its potential impact on Ukraine. While the author paints a dire picture of a possible Donald Trump presidency, I believe there are a few misconceptions that need to be addressed.

First, the claim that Trump will abandon Ukraine is speculative at best. Trump has consistently emphasized his priority of “America First,” which includes strengthening the U.S. economy and military to better negotiate global peace, not abandon it. The argument that Trump will fail to support Ukraine militarily overlooks his past record. During his presidency, Trump was the first to provide lethal aid to Ukraine, including Javelin missiles, which significantly strengthened their defense.

The author also suggests that a forced deal would undermine Ukraine’s morale and compromise its sovereignty. However, diplomacy is not synonymous with defeat. If a deal could save Ukrainian lives and end a prolonged conflict, it’s worth pursuing. Trump’s experience in business has shown his ability to negotiate tough deals—this approach could bring an end to the conflict faster than prolonged military engagements that cost more lives and resources.

Regarding Kamala Harris, while the writer claims she would stand firmly for democracy, the reality is that diplomacy requires more than moral declarations; it requires pragmatism, strategy, and the ability to bring adversaries to the table. Simply arming Ukraine indefinitely is not a viable long-term solution, as it may exacerbate tensions and provoke further escalation.

As for economic impact, the argument that arming Ukraine boosts the U.S. economy is oversimplified. The funds used for foreign aid could also be directed toward urgent domestic needs—education, infrastructure, and healthcare—providing tangible benefits to American citizens.

The author’s assertion that Trump’s talk of peace is a “sham” is dismissive of his broader agenda, which seeks to minimize American involvement in foreign conflicts while still maintaining a strong defense posture. Peace and diplomacy should not be discounted simply because they involve negotiation. Effective leadership finds ways to protect national interests while reducing the cost of conflict, both in terms of lives lost and economic strain.

In the end, it is not about choosing sides, but about choosing the strategy that best serves the American people while aiming for lasting peace. Trump’s approach may seem unconventional, but his business acumen and negotiating skills could offer a different path forward—one that prioritizes resolution over endless conflict.

Sincerely,
John White

  1. Wow! Was that a load of unmitigated stink! The 🍊🤡 has consistently told Ukraine to surrender to Russia. What planet is this author from?

He goes on to claim the 🍊🤡 is an astute businessman which is nonsense. Trump made money because Roy Cohn made sure of it. Then the 🍊🤡 lost a great deal of his fortune and ultimately left his friend and mentor to die alone.

He has been a habitual abuser, a grifter and a cheat.

If the Republican candidate was even slightly as terrific as this letter claims he still wouldn’t have the qualifications for the job because he lacks compassion, analytical skill, and humility. Things you really can’t learn even with a rich powerful mentor.

    1. He is a con man and a threat to all real American’s, he should never been able to run for President or even dog catcher

  2. Anyone claiming Trump has negotiations or business skills doesn’t know much about Donald Trump. He is a terrible negotiator and a worse businessman.

This letter is well written, but uninformed.

  3. “Business acumen & negotiating skills”? Donald Trump betrayed the United States of America and desecrated the presidential oath of office. After riding President Obama’s STRONG recovery for the first 2 years, Trump increases the debt by $8 trillion, gives a $1.7 trillion tax cut to US corporations & hands working people the bill with the China tariffs. He caused farms to reach a record level of farm bankruptcies, horrifically mismanaged a pandemic that killed more Americans than Hitler, forcing businesses to shutdown and drives us into a recession. Hence Trump was ranked the worst potus in history by Presidential historians. Trump failed- He had a chance and he blew it!

  4. I’m sorry, John, but you have provided quite a few misleading comments in your letter.

    1. “Trump has consistently emphasized his priority of “America First,” which includes strengthening the U.S. economy and military to better negotiate global peace, not abandon it. The argument that Trump will fail to support Ukraine militarily overlooks his past record.”

Trump has consistently pushed Zelensky to “seek peace” by “ced[ing] some of its land to Russia”. Ask yourself if Russia had invaded America, would YOU be willing to cede some of our land to Putin?

    2. “During his presidency, Trump was the first to provide lethal aid to Ukraine, including Javelin missiles, which significantly strengthened their defense.”

Yes, Trump did. But “Trump had been reluctant to go ahead with the move and only did so when aides persuaded him that it could be good for U.S. business.

    3. “As for economic impact, the argument that arming Ukraine boosts the U.S. economy is oversimplified.”

And, yet, this is what Trump actually thought and why he provided the weapons in the first place.

    4. “Effective leadership finds ways to protect national interests while reducing the cost of conflict, both in terms of lives lost and economic strain.”

It’s a good thing that John White was not a soldier in the Revolutionary Army. Because he would have quit early on…since people were dying and land was getting destroyed and we should have reconciled with Great Britain with some concessions on their part.

    1. Wow, that is some pretty interesting mental gymnastics to classify someone with 34 felonious convictions for falsifying invoices and other documents, who has been hamstrung from conducting business in the state of New York, who has filed for bankruptcy four times, as having “business acumen.” He had classified documents in his bathroom, for crying out loud. I mean, the list just goes on! As for Ukraine, Trump has repeatedly and publicly praised Vladimir Putin, and repeatedly and publicly blamed Zelenskyy. Might he assist bringing about the end to the violence? Perhaps, at a cost to both Ukraine and the American public, because his loyalties to Putin and Russia (the country that helped elect him by interfering in the 2016 election) are stronger than his faith in the Americans that he insults at every turn, and whom he incited violence against on January 6, 2020.

    2. tRump is a con man, have you read Project 2025, I suggest you do, he’ll ruin America and I have no respect for him, maga, and all the lemmings following him

  5. I’ve read w/ interest the two letters relating to Ukraine, one by Irene Danysh who is Ukrainian by heritage, and splits her time between Burien and Ukraine; and John White, an innovative, successful businessman here in Burien.

Mr. White wrote “Ms. Danysh’s claim that Trump will abandon Ukraine is speculative at best”: Trump tried to illegally withhold shipments/support for Ukraine until Zelensky opened an investigation into Biden and Burisma. Remember that illegal, corrupt act?

When asked by a major network if he wanted Ukraine to win Mr. Trump would NOT say yes. (What does “winning” mean? To me it means kicking Russia out of Ukraine. They illegally marched in, began bombing and shooting their way to take territory. Mr. Putin is drenched in the blood of innocent men, women, and children of all ages. Including his own countrymen. Remember those lines of tanks ready to go into Ukraine??!)

Trump has repeatedly belittled NATO and its importance, even going so far as to suggest that the U.S. might not honor section 5 of the alliances’ commitment to come to the aid of fellow NATO members. Why are the many professional, military men who’ve worked with him warning us that Mr. Trump is unfit?

Mr. White states Diplomacy “requires pragmatism, strategy, and the ability to bring adversaries to the table.” Trump showed very clearly when he was president that the leaders he most admired – were dictators. Trump showed absolutely no ability to compromise, strategize, work as a team player, with our partners in Europe and beyond. It’s always “I alone can fix it” … “my way or the highway”. He acts the role of a big tough guy; but he gets played because he is not schooled in global history, The United States’ respect for the rule of law and our Constitution, AND he’s vulnerable to flattery.
Whereas Ms. Harris is the schooled, thoughtful, smart one, who has taken on the strongest, most wily opponents in court and on debate stages – and she’s dominated them – from drug lords to Mr. Trump.. She works with people of all stripes, her coalition is the broadest of any Presidential candidate in our history.

Finally Mr. White lauds Trump’s business acumen and negotiating skills. Why then does he have so many court cases due to laws broken, women abused, and important high security papers taken illegally from the White House when he left?

Peace, intelligent compromise, and fair play are not descriptors of Mr. Trump.

But he is very good at – fear mongering. He’s made people afraid and pitted us against one another. That’s a shameful, ugly way to win an election. … I’ve already voted.

  6. I’d have to say I’m not too fond of either candidate this term but I will choose one over the other .. and believe or not…. Kamala is not fit to be president nor is our current president. (I don’t need to go into the US economics right now to show the obvious) Also the current democratic party inside the office is not qualified in general as shown with Biden. I believe trump lacks in some areas so I have a few doubts there as well but strong leadership, trust, cognoscente mindset and pro USA is whats needed across the board. We need to focus on the USA. The better of the two evils is going to be Trump.
