[EDITOR’S NOTEThe following is a Letter to the Editor, written and submitted by a verified resident. It does not necessarily reflect the opinions of South King Media, nor its staff:]

First, let me thank you for the announcement in the blog prior to the parade. It helped us get a few extra (4) men for the flags. That means a lot to us.

Secondly, one of those who contacted me after your blog piece was former military man George Johnson, who served in the Navy during “WWII”.  YES World War II. George is 96 years young and walked the entire parade route. That is the greatest generation indeed.

Finally, and most importantly, to the surprise of the newer veterans walking with us, so many of the spectators along the parade route got up off their chairs or the curb as the flag was passing. Some even saluted the flag as it was carried by.

That small gesture by the public means so much to those of us who were carrying the flags. There is still obviously so much love and patriotism for this country even in these times of apparent upheaval that is shown to us daily on the television. America is still a loved country.

Thank you so much for your help in recruiting more flag carriers and veterans.

God bless America,
Chuck Rangel
