DM0914-500 On Friday, Feb. 13, Burien’s Northwest Symphony Orchestra will present its popular Valentine’s Concert at the Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien. The concert will feature pieces centered around the theme of love stories, including Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov’s Scheherezade, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, and Valse sur le Boulevard, by local Northwest composer Brent Irwin. “We pull out all the stops for this concert with two of classical music’s greatest depictions of love stories.” Scheherazade’s epic tale will be followed by Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, still the outstanding musical representation of this legendary story by Shakespeare. This concert is sure to warm any heart in the middle of winter.” Brent Irwin is a native of Everett, Washington who started arranging music in high school and has written music for concert band, jazz band and orchestra. He earned an MA in music theory and composition from Central Washington University. Brent has taught music for 30 years in the Federal Way Public Schools, where he currently teaches. His works have been performed by local symphonies and countless school orchestras. Today, he composes primarily for what he considers the ultimate musical ensemble, the symphony orchestra.
