Lorenzo+Xavier The victims of Monday night’s horrific crash (read our previous coverage here), were a man named Lorenzo and his 7-year old son Xavier – both seriously injured as a result of a 15-year old girl running a red light and hitting his truck. The impact of the crash split Lorenzo’s pickup truck in half, and the damages were devastating: Lorenzo works at Angelo’s of Burien on SW 153rd Street, and his fellow employees have created a GoFundMe online fundraiser for him, with the goal of raising $10,000:

Lorenzo and son are still recovering at Harborview Medical Center. Lorenzo’s brother – who also works at Angelo’s – said that he has shown some movement in his left side and wiggled his fingers. He has still not awakened though. His 7-year old son is not paralyzed, despite what some Seattle-area media has reported. His son is doing okay. The 15-year old girl who crashed into them is suspected of driving under the influence. Here’s more info from the GoFundMe page:
Many of you know Lorenzo from Angelo’s. Unfortunately, he and his son were involved in a serious car accident on Monday. We set up a Go Fund Me to help ease the financial strain being put on his family so that they can focus on giving Lorenzo and Xavier all of the emotional support they need. Lorenzo’s family and the Ricci family thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your prayers for the full recovery of Lorenzo and his son. Lorenzo is a beloved, hardworking father who was seriously injured in a car accident with his son on Monday evening in Burien. The two are at Harborview and we are praying for their full recovery. On Monday evening they were broadsided by a 15-year-old female who was possibly intoxicated and ran a red light. The impact of the crash split Lorenzo’s pickup truck in half and thedamages were devastating. The Angelo’s Family are trying to raise money for his family to help pay for medical bills and other expenses. Lorenzo is a cook and busser at Angelo’s of Burien and is a prized member of the Angelo’s family. On behalf of all of his family, friends, and coworkers we ask that you please donate anything you can spare to help ease the financial strain being put on his family so that they can focus on giving Lorenzo and Xavier all of the emotional support they need. There will be a fundraiser held at Angelo’s where a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the family as well. The date of that is TBD but we will update it here. “Your continued thoughts and prayers are appreciated!”

  1. I am glad they are both improving. These things take time but it looks like they have lots of people rooting for them. Given that Lorenzo and his little boy were obviously not at fault in any way, shape, or form, we can at least find some comfort in that they will not be on the hook for any of the medical expenses, at least ultimately. And they should get a replacement vehicle out of it via insurance. I am a little leery of GoFundMe fundraisers because they are based solely on trust. I have heard of people who have set up fake ones and taken the money and run, and also legitimate ones where a family member or friend then goes and buys themselves a fancy car instead of spending the money as promised. It’s the same reason why I don’t give money to homeless people–you just never know. This will likely be “thumbs downed,” but I still encourage people to be cautious in these situations.

    1. Hey “BetterBurien”…..I have known all the people involved in this for YEARS. The things you have heard about does NOT APPLY HERE. Please donate without reservations. Even WITH insurance there very well may be a period of disability for Lorenzo and he will need care & help with his son.

    2. BetterBurien, I completely understand your feelings about GoFundMe. I work at Angelos with Lorenzo and we are a family. Most of us have worked together for at least a decade if not more. I can guarantee this money will go to his family. I had a tragedy 5 years ago and my Angelos family rallied behind me both emotionally and monetarily. I’m so amazed by the support already shown by our amazing co-workers and customers as well as all the other people who have donated or said a prayer.

      1. will Angelos be accepting donations for the family? I’m skeptical of Gofundme too when I don’t know the organizer.

        1. Again I completely understand! There is a jar at Angelos if you feel more comfortable that way.

        2. I’ve heard that Angelo’s is indeed accepting donations for the family. Also I saw a post today that on Wednesday June 8th ten percent of their proceeds will go toward the cause. Reservations highly recommended.

    3. How do you know that either vehicle was insured? Clearly the man won’t be back to work for a very long time to be able to feed his family and pay his rent. There are other considerations aside from medical bills.

  2. This is so sad. Lorenzo is a great guy. I’ve always enjoyed his service at Angelo’s. …..and his son….what a beautiful young boy. They’re in my prayers.

  3. Probably won’t see a dime come from person at fault. Do you know that just two days in an ICU unit could run up to $100,000 even without any surgery. Can you imagine the bills in regards to this wreck. I hope there are serious consequences for causing such a horrendous traffic accident entirely based on poor decisions and just out having fun illegally. This is my opinion and my opinion only.

    1. James L. Hopefully Lorenzo had insurance because you can bet the other driver didn’t. Yet, if he has more family at home there’s rent, bills, their care. I was shocked to hear the other driver was released to home arrest with electronic monitoring. Excuse me? For almost killing two persons? On a happier note I love watching how the Angelo’s community and many others have rallied for this tragic situation.

    2. The girl was underage and not licensed, therefore not insured. If Lorenzo had uninsured motorist there is usually a low max payout on those. They are going to need siginifcant financial help for sure! Praying for them and will support them as much I can.

      1. Angela,
Yes, there is a cash fund in the bar at Angelo’s and we have a fundraiser coming up where 10% of each check will go directly to Lorenzo and his family. It will be on Wednesday, June 8th. There will also be a raffle held as well where 100% of those donations will go to his family as well. I can assure you that the go fund me is going to his family to help them in this time.

      2. Actually insurance goes with the vehicle. If the car belongs to her parents, which it probably does, some companies would extend coverage.
Also, the uninsured motorist would payout at whatever coverage limits that Lorenzo has for bodily injury and property damage. Not at reduced amount.
Hopefully Lorenzo has Personal Injury Protection as well. That will help with tjr medical bills.
Always important to know your coverages and what they mean and how your Family is covered.
I work for Farmers in Burien and we hear stories every single day. But this one is absolutely devastating. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

        1. Are you saying a Farmer’s Insurance policy would cover unlicenced and underage drivers? I doubt it.

      3. Odds are the owner of the car will be held responsible, especially if it’s their daughter. Their car insurance will be on the hook and since it’s pure negligence, their homeowner’s coverage and personal assets (they owned a BMW, right?) may also be tapped.
It’s a crime so the State’s Crime Victim’s Compensation program will cover counseling and perhaps other things. But it seems that young driver should have some sort of long term obligation to contribute as well.
It is hard to comprehend that someone sent her home instead of to detention. How can she be expected to learn anything about reality, responsibility, and cause & effect? Are we saying our facilities are not fancy enough for children who can “borrow” their folk’s BMW? Just ok for poor kids?
There’s something about this that makes me feel unusually hard-hearted – I’m not sure why. It’s hard to feel soft about the young driver in the face of unnecessary cruelty and harm like this. How do we know that Lorenzo will be ok intellectually if he’s not yet awake?
I don’t know this family, but I find myself deeply distressed. I wish there was more up-to-date coverage about their medical condition.

    3. Hello…
I am finding that a lot of people are not aware of Crime Victims Assistance through the Dept of Labor and Industries.
My husband was involved in a horrific motorcycle accident caused by another driver and CVA was a life saver. Covered some lost wages etc.
Feel free to contact me if you would like and I can tell you what they did on behalf of my husband.
      Warm regards.
      Kristi

  4. How much time in jail you think a 15 Yo will get if found guilty..How much cash you think the family has for restitution. The answer to both is little to none. Opinion only..

  5. Prayers sent to the family. I am so happy to hear his son is not paralized. I hope this 15 year old pays for what she did. If she just gets a slap on the wrist what is she learning??she should be ashamed of herself and have to live with the guilt and never be able to forget what she has done. I wish judge would order her to write monitary check monthly for the rest of her life to both.Lorenzo and his son .I know it will never make up for the life long damage that she put upon lorenzo, son and family but these young kids have to learn that life is not a joke and cars are not to play with .each adult that was in the car and those that ran should face criminal charges. And I hope the judge holds her parents responsible and the owner of the car. I also hope the little girl, her family and her friends reads each and every comment and realizes the heartbreak and pain they put upon this family. She doesn’t deserve the prilvage to drive either.these young people need to understand the damaging consequences that alcohol and drugs play in not only their life but to everyone the come in contact with. Good luck to all involved.
