A female wood duck at Arbor Lake is the subject of this week’s Photo Friday image from Mike O’Kelley, who said he and Marie recently noticed a few of the birds after not spotting any there in past years.

O’Kelley reported seeing one male and three females.

The female pictured has a distinctive white eye patch shaped like a teardrop and is noticeably smaller than the lake’s resident mallards, he said.

The colorful male has been harder to photograph, keeping far from shore and beyond the reach of O’Kelley’s camera.

“The awesomely colorful male has remained far from shore and out of range for my primitive point-n-shoot,” O’Kelley wrote, and later added:

“The wood ducks have apparently moved on now. Quite a few widgeons have arrived. They usually stay until around April.”
