Story & Photos by Scott SchaeferUnder soaking, soggy skies, 468 hearty runners braved the dreaded ‘Snake Hill’ to run the Cove to Clover fundraiser 5K, with 17-year old Marques Chacon crowned the overall winner with a time of 18:12.
Last year’s top finisher had a winning time of 19:41, so Marques – who attends Evergreen High School – really picked the pace up.
For much of the race, Marques was neck-and-neck with his twin brother Matthew (we thought we were seeing double!), as well as with second-place finisher Kelly MacKay, the early leader.
The top female runner was 14-year old Emma Flood, who clocked in at 23:08.
The oldest runner to finish was Melvin Gruschow, 73.
The oldest woman to finish was Kathleen Vermeire, 70.
Of the 468 finishers, here are the Top 10:

a tip of the hat to participants. This was a perfect day for many to turn into couch potatoes!
Nothing but RESPECT for those that ran in such Crappy conditions today… Everyone was a Winner… I stayed inside.
Gotta give a call out to Matt Parker, who finished the 5K portion of the race in 22.22, after hammering out the SUP sprint start. Would have been 14th overall in the 5K with that time.
Great job runners! Lets give a shout out to all the volunteers who were out in the rain as well
Actually, I was neck and neck with 2nd and 3rd place for most of the race. Marques was way ahead of us.
