The City of Burien is moving forward with an update to its Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO), a state-mandated review required under the Washington Growth Management Act.

The update is a key component of implementing Burien’s 2044 Comprehensive Plan, and is being led by the city’s Community Development Department.

Under RCW 36.70A.130, all counties and cities in Washington must periodically review and revise their critical areas regulations to ensure compliance with state law and to reflect local environmental priorities.

Critical areas can include wetlands, streams, flood-prone zones, and geologically hazardous lands.

The city says that the updated CAO will guide how development can occur in these areas while minimizing environmental harm.
