Burien Police / King County Sheriff’s Office are warning residents about another potential scam, this time involving hacked Facebook friend pages:

Please make sure you TRULY know the person behind the keyboard, or smartphone app, before providing any money or information.

On Sept. 21, 2020 at 4:30 p.m., a Burien deputy was dispatched to take a fraud report in the 12600 block of 24th Avenue South. Burien is a contract city and partner of the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim told the deputy she had been contacted via Facebook messenger by a friend requesting $300.00. Thinking she was really helping her friend, she followed her “friend’s” instructions to send the money by way of another website.

She later learned her friend’s Facebook account had been hacked. At this time it is unknown if the victim will receive her money back from her financial institution.

If you get a request like this, we recommend texting or calling the person making the request to verify it’s legit.
