Looking for a way to give back to our community this holiday season? Skunk Works Robotics, a FIRST Robotics team serving students from Burien and West Seattle, is calling on the community to help them reach a critical fundraising goal.

The team – comprised of students in grades 8-12 – has extended its campaign deadline to Jan. 15, 2025, as they aim to secure $5,000 in matching funds from a generous supporter.

As of now, the team has raised over $4,000, but the additional funds are essential to offset unexpected monthly building rental costs beginning in January.

“This match is especially critical, as they have come up against unexpected and unbudgeted monthly building rental costs starting in January,” organizers said.

These unexpected costs could hinder their ability to provide scholarships and fully fund their build and travel season, which involves designing and building a 125 lb. competition robot in 8 weeks, and traveling to four local competitions, including the regional competition in Cheney, WA, and hopefully the FIRST Robotics Worlds competition in Houston, Texas, which they last attended in 2023.

Skunk Works Robotics, which is a 4-H community team, has provided hands-on STEM education to local students for over 18 years, regardless of their financial situation.

Volunteer mentors and coaches have helped the team achieve a 100% college acceptance rate and pave the way for successful STEM careers.
