Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Seattle Field Office Supervisory Immigration Services Officer Lihn Tran will administer the Oath of Allegiance to 22 of America’s newest citizens during a special naturalization ceremony at the Burien Library today (Tuesday, Sept. 22) at 2 p.m.
This event is part of USCIS’ annual celebration of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.
Gary Wasdin, King County Library System Director, will be the keynote speaker.
A welcome will be offered by Angie Benedetti, King County Library System Manager.
Constitution Day and Citizenship Day are celebrated on Sept. 17 in remembrance of the signing of the Constitution in 1787. This year, more than 36,000 new citizens will take their oath in more than 200 ceremonies across the country between September 17 and 23. Since 1952, Citizenship Day has been celebrated in conjunction with Constitution Day. Congress first underscored the significance of U.S. citizenship in 1940, when it designated the third Sunday in May as “I Am an American Day.”
USCIS invites new citizens and their families and friends to share the experience via Twitter using the hashtag #newUScitizen.
Here’s the Oath of Allegiance that these new Americans will recite:
“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God.”
